Do Red Light Masks Really Work?

In the spirit of love and loving yourself… I wanted to share my experience with the viral red light therapy mask obsession I found one day while scrolling on Instagram. I’ve shared with you all I’m on a wellness journey – which include loving my skin more, too. Well, I’m here to give you a full review and breakdown of my experience using a red light face mask.

For context, I’m a 36-year-old mom of two who works full time. I’ve never had botox or even a facial or any skin treatment (if we’re being honest). Until about the last year, I didn’t give aging a second thought. But… this year I turn 37 and I’ve noticed some fine lines. I know I won’t be getting botox, so finding a holistic option is at the top of my list. I am no beauty expert, so anything I use needs to be user friendly and actually does the job. So, is the new viral skincare obsession worth the hype?

Spoiler: my red light therapy mask is one of my favorite tools in my graceful aging toolkit.

SO, what is red light therapy? Red light therapy is a non-invasive treatment using LED to mimic the wavelengths that naturally occur in sunlight. Compared to other forms of LED light therapy, red light penetrates further into the skin. As a result, it’s commonly used to treat signs of aging, including wrinkles, redness, acne, and scarring.

My skincare goals are to reduce fine lines and stimulate collagen to promote more vibrant skin – aka ‘that girl glow’! Remember, self care is self love.

There are so many red light masks on the market, but it is so important to invest in that right one. I also wanted a mask that was comfortable and one I could use while doing other tasks.  And I have to say, Bon Charged checked everything on my wish list.

My Results

Red Light Therapy: My Experience

Red light therapy was something I fully did not understand and didn’t give a second thought to for a long time. When I started getting into biohacking and learning ways to support my body, an entire new world of gadgets and little known hacks were discovered. One of them being red light therapy.

Both my husband and I have been exploring the world of biohacking and clean eating (80% of the time – because hey, we aren’t perfect and we enjoy eating out from time to time). One biohacking concept that kept coming up was red light therapy so on a whim we welcomed one into our life.

A special thank you to Bon Charge for introducing us to our first red light device. We started small – but let me tell you, we are ready to go big. In late April we started using this mini red light device (code: MARISSA15 to save) before bed.

You place the small device in front of you or the area you want to focus on for 10 minutes a day. We have the handheld version but they also make large full-body versions, too. Now here’s the cool part, the red light stimulates collagen production and helps with stiffness and soreness.

I place it over my foot – I’ve had chronic foot issues since I was young but over the last two years, it has just intensified. My left foot tends to give me sharp pains when I walk and gets very stiff on me. The first time I used the mini red light, my foot went from stiff to flexible after a 10 minute red light session. MIND BLOWN! It’s truly amazing and makes me so happy because my foot feels normal again.

Can it be a bit pricey? Yes, it can. But for me, the price is so worth it. We’re headed on a couple of trips soon and you bet that mini red light is coming with us! It is perfect for travel or on the go red light sessions.

You can add red light to your face with a mask, on your neck with a neck enhancer like I talked about in my last blog or even just a mini hand held box will go a long way to making you feel amazing.

A Mom’s Beginners Guide to Biohacking

It feels good to feel good. The past 8 months, I’ve been really focused on my health. I’m not perfect and my consistency still needs work, but I’ve never felt better.

On top of consistent movement and focusing on my nutrition (see more on that here!), I’ve also been playing and experimenting with “biohacking.” In case you’re not familiar, biohacking is the idea of “hacking” or boosting your biology and cells to improve your health. Now, there are all kinds of different approaches, opinions, and methods of biohacking out there. I’ve found a few simple practices that I can fit into my everyday life, don’t take up a ton of time, and truly do make me feel better mentally, physically, and beyond. I kind of look at it as an investment into my health. Is it cheap? Absolutely not! Do you need all of these things? Nope. Have they helped me on my health journey? Absolutely.

The one thing that sets apart biohacking from more traditional health improvement methods like exercise and diet – which I’m focusing on as well – is that it creates an immediate improvement. Things like… more energy, better mood, improved blood circulation, or optimizing yourself are all felt pretty quickly! It’s amazing. These also compound over time to improve long-term health, but with most biohacking practices, you also feel some of the benefits right away, which is just plain cool!

For Mother’s Day, I gifted myself the ultimate mom biohacking routine. My new routine focuses on relaxing, lowering stress levels and improving my skin at the same time. I love this routine because it makes introducing biohacking easy. At first, the term “biohacking” intimidated me. But then I realized it could be as simple as taking a serotonin bath and incorporating oils to your skincare routine.

Here’s the best part, since I don’t have too much extra time to spare each day, this biohacking routine takes 45 minutes once a week.

Before I introduced biohacking, I first committed to more movement. I don’t know about you, but if I’m consistently moving – I feel better from head to toe. Next, I gave my skincare routine a glow up. I invested in better products. From serums to makeup. I break it all down in this recent blog post. Next, I stepped into the biohacking world.

My Fave Biohacking Tools for Beginners
  1. Serotonin Bath: I regret all the baths I neglected to take. But it is the most relaxing part of my week. I didn’t think they could get better until I started adding two scoops of the Serotonin Soak – wow! Hello to a more relaxed, calm and happy me!   1. Supplements: I hesitate to share exactly what I personally take for supplements. Each person has unique needs. But I’ll share two that I have incorporated into my daily routine. I take vitamin D and magnesium. Both my husband and I have started taking these supplements and have LOVED how they make us feel. We have also began taking a methylated multivitamin. We take this one!
  1. Dry Brushing and oils: did you know dry brushing has been around for centuries? Not only is it relaxing but it enhances circulation, stimulates the lymphatic system and enhances your skin’s glow. Yes to all of that! I do this once a week before I take my bath. It also has helped eliminate some stubborn dry skin. After I dry brush, I use Ritual Oil to boost hydration. You’ll feel so good after. This might be my favorite new biohacking tool!
