Is San Diego Worth Visiting with Family?

July 21, 2024

Living just north of Salt Lake City, we are about an easy 6 hour drive from a few neat vacation spots: Denver, Yellowstone, Las Vegas and anywhere in Idaho or Montana. But if you drive a few more hours, you can find yourself in Southern California.

Our family loves a good beach vacation – so for our big summer trip, we headed to San Diego. Of course, I wanted to make sure I took notes to share with you.

Now, did it make for long drive and day? It sure did. But was it worth it? Our family thinks so, and here’s why.

From Salt Lake City, it was an 11 hour drive – and that included a stop in Las Vegas for breakfast. We left pretty early but you don’t have to do this, it just worked best for our family.

Once we arrived in San Diego, California we were able to check in to our hotel Now, let’s get into why visiting San Diego with your family is 100% worth it.

Beach Front hotel

We stayed just outside of San Diego in La Jolla Shores. If you’re traveling with a larger group, you could easily rent a house nearby. But we love staying at La Jolla Shore Hotel. It’s a charming Spanish style resort that is beachfront and offers incredible amenities. From concierge beach chair and umbrellas set up by staff to daily kids activities including crafts, movies by the pool, snow cones and evening s’mores.

We love to request a garden level room. It opens up to the best garden patio with the most beautiful flowers and trees. After a day at the beach, we loved sitting on our patio soaking in the evening breeze and some ice cream (we will get to that next!). Our pro tip: book your room and request a garden level room.

Food for Everyone

Finding gluten free options and restaurants can be a struggle. But each time we have visited La Jolla, I have felt spoiled by the amazon food options. My favorite thing in the world is to wake up each morning and walk over to Brick & Bell Coffee shop for a latte and a gluten free tangerine muffin. The Shoreshouse is another great breakfast restaurant just a few steps away. If you are willing to drive up the hill, visit The Cottage – they have the best gluten free French toast and breakfast.

For dinner you’ll want to visit Osteria Romantica for authentic Italian food. They can make anything gluten free and have great knowledge on gluten allergies and Celiac Disease. I had the carbonara with gluten free pasta – 10/10! You’ll want to go back again the next night. To end our evenings, each night we stopped by Scoops ice cream. It’s at the end of Avenida de la playa. They offer crepes, milkshakes and ice cream, They even have diary-free, vegan and gluten free options. I’ll bet good money you will leave your vacation craving them for years to come.

You Can Walk Everywhere

From our hotel room, you can walk one minute down the street to Avenida de la Playa. There you’ll find the street is closed off for pedestrians and have shops, restaurants and quick markets. They have neat surf shops and shops for kayak tours. Morning walks to get coffee were the best way to start each day. You really never have to jump in your car for anything. Once you get to the hotel – put those car keys away and enjoy the little town by foot.

San Diego is a Gem

I grew up in Southern California (about 90 minutes north) and never truly appreciated the San Diego area. It is beyond charming, family friendly and easy to get around. I think when most thing San Diego, they might think of Coronado or Downtown San Diego – but La Jolla Shores is the hidden gem. Don’t pass up a chance to stay at this beachfront hotel that offers amenities for kids and parents combined.

I’d love to know if you’ve ever visited the San Diego area – what’s your favorite place or restaurant in the area?

Stay tuned for my next blog post about our tricot Disneyland and all things Pixar Fest!

Father’s Day Gifts He Will Actually Use

May 29, 2024

Father’s Day is quickly approaching so I hope this post gives you a few ideas! I wanted to share some gift ideas to help you shop for the dad in your life. These are all “Hubby Tested and Approved” by my very own husband, Justin. Below are some other favorite and ideas I rounded up for you.

If the dad in your life does not have a Blackstone griddle – trust me, it is probably on his wish list. Justin uses our Blackstone more than anything else. From cooking breakfast to smash burgers, we use our Blackstone weekly. This makes for a great Father’s Day gift because not only will he use it but he will tell all his buddies about it!

Justin loves to grill –  this basket is brilliant. It’s an easy way to grill your favorite veggies the entire family will love. And, dad will have fun cooking them, too!

If you have a husband or dad in your life who works hard and plays hard, then they need a TheraGun in their life. If they don’t already have one, they will thank you for this wellness tool that makes everything better after a hard days work. We have one and use it weekly for back relief.

Both Justin and I have been working to incorporate non-toxic skincare products into our daily routines. For Father’s Day I got Justin a men’s skincare set from Just Ingredients. It’s a five-piece set that includes deodorant, beard oil, men’s hydraulic acid, age defender, after shave and body lotion. It smells SO good! Want a manly scent, try Mountain Pine. It’s that classic men’s scent both you and your husband will love. I love this gift because I know Justin will be using non-toxic products each day – which makes me feel better about his health and wellness. You can use my code to save: MARISSACOTE

Summer is officially here which means backyard bonfire season is upon us. Justin loves to sit by the fire and soak in those summer nights. We have owned a Solo Stove for two years now and love it. The best part is it is smokeless so no more watery eyes while sitting by the fire. It also makes for a pretty patio setting. This is the one we have and absolutely adore.

Happy Father’s Day to all the papa’s out there!

Red Light Therapy: My Experience

May 23, 2024

Red light therapy was something I fully did not understand and didn’t give a second thought to for a long time. When I started getting into biohacking and learning ways to support my body, an entire new world of gadgets and little known hacks were discovered. One of them being red light therapy.

Both my husband and I have been exploring the world of biohacking and clean eating (80% of the time – because hey, we aren’t perfect and we enjoy eating out from time to time). One biohacking concept that kept coming up was red light therapy so on a whim we welcomed one into our life.

A special thank you to Bon Charge for introducing us to our first red light device. We started small – but let me tell you, we are ready to go big. In late April we started using this mini red light device (code: MARISSA15 to save) before bed.

You place the small device in front of you or the area you want to focus on for 10 minutes a day. We have the handheld version but they also make large full-body versions, too. Now here’s the cool part, the red light stimulates collagen production and helps with stiffness and soreness.

I place it over my foot – I’ve had chronic foot issues since I was young but over the last two years, it has just intensified. My left foot tends to give me sharp pains when I walk and gets very stiff on me. The first time I used the mini red light, my foot went from stiff to flexible after a 10 minute red light session. MIND BLOWN! It’s truly amazing and makes me so happy because my foot feels normal again.

Can it be a bit pricey? Yes, it can. But for me, the price is so worth it. We’re headed on a couple of trips soon and you bet that mini red light is coming with us! It is perfect for travel or on the go red light sessions.

You can add red light to your face with a mask, on your neck with a neck enhancer like I talked about in my last blog or even just a mini hand held box will go a long way to making you feel amazing.

I absolutely love how biohacking continues to improve my lifestyle. I’d love to know if you’ve dipped your toes into the biohacking world… comment below with your favorite tool!

If you think red light might improve your lifestyle, Bon Charge was nice enough to pass along a code to help you save on your next red light or other biohacking purchase on their site. Use code MARISSA15 when you visit their website.

As a busy mom who loves her decor and a clean home As a busy mom who loves her decor and a clean home, a spill proof rug that’s actually beautiful is a must!!

Tumble made my living room dreams come true!

Their rug system is brilliant. All you do is place the mats together and lay the beautiful rug on top. Took me 10 minutes to put together. The rug and mats are soft on your bare feet. And, if you accidentally spill something - Tumble is machine washable!

Not only is it durable but this might very well be the most beautiful rug I’ve ever owned.

If you have kids or pets, this rug will change your life. It’s the ultimate family friendly rug!
